A few years ago, Kenneth and Carole Hauer watched the Shot Show and found a Cap and Ball LeMath revolver sold by Naval Weapons. Kenneth had always been interested in Jean Alexandre LeMath's revolver designs and decided to commission one. About a month later, their Navy Arms Lemat arrived in the mail.

Kenneth picked up the new Navy Surveyor and studied it very carefully. He liked the overall design, but was more interested in the two-barrel concept. He began to think about how to make a double-barreled revolver. He thought of Lemat's hood and ball on a cartridge revolver and the rifled barrel he called a 50-28. With these basic concepts in mind, in the evenings Kenneth would sit in front of the television and hand-draw the general layout of the Hower Single Action 12 Shot Revolver on paper.

I heard about the Hower Revolver from my uncle, Mike Thompson. My aunt and uncle are friends with Howers. My brother suggested I go to Hauer's house and see this beast of a gun. My brother said it was a big revolver, but I wasn't prepared for its size. I made up my mind and thought I might see one of these pistols when I go to Kansas. If Hower Revolver is all that, I thought it might be a story worth writing.

12-shot with a single Hauer action, you can see twelve .357 magnum chambers and a center rifling barrel chambered in 50-28 Hauer. When the barrel breaks, the cartridge ejection ring hits the blank.
The barrel band is 24 karat gold with a .357 cal plating around the Douglas. upper barrel and Hauer 50-28 cal. bottom or middle barrel.

Hauer's single action 12 shot revolver is engraved and case hardened. To the left of the designer and maker is the name "Kenneth Hower Maker". This is a great tool.
A closer look at the left shows the 24 carat gold inlay on the cylinder. All components are very precise and tightly connected.
My brother and my father arrived at the Hauer residence, where Kenneth Hauer led us directly into the kitchen. On the kitchen table was a Hower Single Action 12 Shot Revolver. With permission, I picked up this beast and quickly realized that it was even bigger when I held it. Hands down, at 11.1 pounds, this revolver is not a one-handed weapon. I looked for versatility and functionality with the Hower Revolver. I noticed that a lot of thought went into the design of this tool. A 50-caliber lower barrel was fired from the rifle, and 12 rounds were securely placed in the center of the cylinder. The case fitting was professionally done and worked well with the overall look of this instrument.
I turned to Kenneth and looked at the man for a long time. Then I asked him what happened to 12 shots in one move. 50-28 sub barrel with a .357 magnum single shot? Kenneth smiled. It took five years and 1,200 man hours to tell his story. The story began at the Shot Show and the acquisition of a nine-shot Lemat cap and ball replica. Kenneth said he likes the two-barrel concept and the nine-shot capability. Desperate to create his own design, Kenneth decided that instead of the powder cap and Lemat ball, he would fire cartridges. His revolver fires 12 shots and the center or lower barrel is some sort of .50 caliber.

Kenneth said he looked at the attributes of different calibers and chose the .357 magnum. It is a .357 mag. The .36 caliber replicates the .36 caliber Lemat models. .357 mg. with an outer diameter of .379, he extrapolated this by twelve, adding enough room for chamber pressure to create the circle. Given these numerical equations, Kenneth determined that the diameter of the revolver cylinder would be 2.87 inches. From these dimensions, he builds outwards to create the Hower Single Action 12 Shot. It took into account the steel to be used and set it for a 4340 cylinder due to its strength. Kenneth chose the A36 for its handling and stiff frame. He used 4140 for the hammer, trigger, cap, and internals because these parts would have little or no use after finishing the heat treatment.
With hand-drawn plans and calibers, metal selection, and a general idea of how it would work, Kenneth Hower began a five-year odyssey with Karolia that resulted in the Hower Single Action 12 Shot Revolver. Hauer began by milling the cylinder and creating an internal ejection ring that ejected the cartridges from their chambers. He turned the cylinder and cut the lock sections and round holes to shave some weight. After completing the cylinder, he went to work on the frame. After spending a lot of time, he perfected the frame that would hold the other parts of this instrument together. After the frame was finished, Hauer took blanks of A36 steel and tried to harden the color. He wanted to improve the system before using it on a single revolver frame.
After several attempts, Hauer was not satisfied with the results. Hauer then contacted Doug Turnbull of Turnbull Restoration and Manufacturing Company in Bloomfield, New York. After some discussion, Hauer agreed to send Turnbull for intensive treatment of the pigment. Hauer would later learn that was easier said than done. He discovered that shipping companies would not insure this unique weapon part or provide a replacement guarantee if lost. The only option was to ship the frame from Arkansas City, Kansas to Bloomfield, New York. Howers decided to take the Amtrak passenger train from Newton, Kansas to Bloomfield. This will prevent the frame from being lost in checked baggage during air travel. For this, they had to take a train to Arkansas City, New York. They then took a two-day trip to Bloomfield, then taxied the Turnbull Restoration and Manufacturing Company to transfer the Hauer frame to Doug. The Hauers then traveled via Amtrak to Newton and returned to their rural home near Arkansas City. After the paint was finished drying, Howers agreed to meet with Doug Turnbull at Wannenmacher's Tulsa Gun Show, where he brought the finished work.
Hauer decided to purchase a .357 barrel blank from Douglas Barrels. As for the lower or middle barrel, he chose to manufacture his own from 4130 steel. He chose this steel for two reasons. One is the traditional steel previously used for barrels, and two are stock 4130 steel on hand. The bit that Hauer used in his first attempt to use the rifle on an empty barrel was attached to the last half inch of the plate. Another free and second try made it 50-28 down the barrel of Hauer's try.

Kenneth specially made a barrel band to support the two barrels at the end. He told me that barrel banding was the only process he had to do many times. He said he doesn't know why, but every project has its problems, and that was the case with the Hower Revolver.
After the webs were finished and the frame was back in paint, Hauer built the trigger and associated parts. He then created a hammer with a block attached to its face. .357 mg with the slide block up.
