Fort Sill is located in southwest Oklahoma, with Lawton as a neighboring community just outside the gates. Personally, being from Chicago, I really enjoy the sunny and mild weather. You can get crazy storms here and there - hail, heavy rain and strong winds - but luckily the mountains are great at blocking any tornado threat.

The weather makes for a great time at the beautiful LETRA Lake and Post Park facility, with cabins, a family beach, picnic areas and a wide variety of outdoor activities. Elmer Thomas Park is also a great place to enjoy a picnic around the pond, a free splash park in the summer, and a park for all ages! There are many dog parks on post and around Lawton. Some of our first friends we met were in local parks. If you enjoy nature, this is the place for you!

Mount Scott is a very popular site located within the Wichita Mountain Refuge. Here you will see bison, pronghorn and lots of cute little prairie dogs. The holy city is also tucked away in the highlands; it is a perfect place to reflect and get to know the historical monument. Another great place to visit is the quaint town of Medicine Park - lovely shops, great views and a short drive to the whole area.

I could go on and on about all the beauty around and all the outdoor opportunities on and off base. At first, Lawton/Fort Sill may seem like all restaurants, casinos, churches, and car washes (my first thought), but I had to stop comparing it to lush trees, lakes, and my house in the suburbs. It has a lot to offer, you just have to be willing to explore to find it!

Fort Sill has a nice PX and Commissary with lots of restaurants and shopping. There is a bowling alley, four recreation centers, an indoor pool, numerous outdoor pools, splash parks, a movie theater, countless parks, a youth center, a very active USO, numerous places of worship and a large facility called Patriot Spouses. Club for parties and events.

Fort Sill/Lawton has many restaurants to choose from and even plenty of food trucks for all food lovers. Our favorites are Ted's Escondido, Burger Joint, Rib Crib, Firehouse Subs, Braum's Ice Cream and The Wright's Diner. Medicine Park has some fantastic restaurants, especially Old Plantation, which has great food that makes you feel like you're back home in your grandma's kitchen!

The Lawton Public School District is the school district for the area, including the post school: Liberty Elementary. There are also several private schools in the area. Fort Sill has wonderful part-time and full-time child care options, with many facilities and in-home care located on base. The youth center offers play and leisure activities, a technology lab, a homework center, individual sports, group sports and other fitness activities.

The Fort Sill community is very active throughout the year, with many holiday celebrations and special events. Trunk-or-Treat is one of our favorites, along with the LETRA Movie on the Beach, Dog Days of Summer Pool Fun, ACS Playgroup and Park Exploration events, the Elmer Thomas Christmas Parade, NYE Library Hour, and more. !

As a Midwesterner who grew up near Chicago, I love being only an hour and a half from Oklahoma City! This city is thriving, with lots of activities for singles, couples and families. The zoo has many animals and hosts several special events. Both Oklahoma City and Edmond have many wonderful museums and playgrounds for your kids to explore. The Oklahoma State Fair is the biggest event of the year every September. Lots of delicious food and family fun!

Dallas is only 2.5 hours away with its endless activities and places to visit, with fun rodeo shows in Fort Worth and amazing shopping in Grapevine. Tulsa is 3.5 hours east with great shopping, great museums and a nice botanical garden. All hardworking riders with great communities full of experiences for everyone!

Fort Sill is a great place for a family and we really enjoyed our time here. The weather is sunny and mild almost every day, giving us plenty of opportunities to make great memories outdoors with our kids and dog. The base itself is dedicated to caring for its soldiers and their families, with countless activities to promote community and well-being. We are very grateful for all the experiences we have had so far in this great place.
