Made from aerospace-grade 7075-T6 aluminum forging, the flat-top upper receiver includes a forward assist, dust cock and brass deflector.

The bolt is machined from 9310 alloy steel and stress (proof) to ensure strength, structural integrity and durability.

The bolt carrier and gas key are chrome plated inside diameter to provide exceptional resistance to hot gases. The gas key is stacked so that it does not come loose after extensive firing. A matte black oxide finish on the outside of the bolt carrier provides corrosion resistance. One of the hottest trends around these days is the AR-15 pistol, as the BATF in its limited wisdom

Decided that a single arm brass pistol could be shouldered from time to time. (Previously, if you shouldered an AR-type pistol with an armband, you were "redesigning" it and breaking federal law.) But if you primarily carry an armband The bracelet was strapped on, it was almost impossible to get the AR pistol. Closer to your face, for an accurate looking picture. So, a lot of people were swinging their arms under their arms and firing like that—a spray and pray thing. It's an inefficient waste of ammo.

Ruger Ar 556: A New Reliable, Affordable Autoloading Modern Sporting Rifle!

I've reviewed a few other AR pistols over the past year, and they're great shooters, with the arm attached. One had an adjustable arm strap, and a static position. To be sure, an adjustable arm bracelet is best. At first glance, you'd think these AR pistols are a butt stick - they're not! They are still designed to wrap around the hand. However, some of these bras are beautiful in their design, and you can easily wear them.

Today, we're looking at Ruger's latest offering, and they call it their AR-556 pistol. Many uneducated people will think you are shooting an SBR (short barrel rifle) when they see the 10.5-barrel on the AR-556. But it is still classified as a pistol, because there are arm braces and it meets all BATF rules and regulations for pistols. Keep in mind that, because it is still considered a pistol, you cannot put a vertical forward pistol grip on the forehead of this gun, if you do, you are breaking federal law.

A quick rundown on the AR-556 is in order: First, the arm rest is from SB Tactical and is their SBA3 Pistol Stabilization Brace – it is not classified as a buttstock by the ATF. And, it's one of the best arm braces I've seen out there, with one-click adjustable length. The handguard is free floated M-LOK with attachment slots. As already mentioned, the barrel is 10.5 inches long, and the gas tube is the length of an R carbine. In contrast, some other manufacturers used smaller gas tubes, and had to change them in order for the gun to operate reliably.

The barrel twist is 1:8, so it will stabilize bullets from 35-grain to 77-grain—the best barrel end even has a flash suppressor. It's Ruger's own design, which I like a lot, and the barrel is ½”-28 threaded, so if you want to add a silencer you can - once you get the federal hoops and red tape. Jump through. The finish on the receiver is type III hard coat anodized - hard material. Ruger says the pistol weighs 6.2 pounds, but it feels at least half a pound lighter than that. The hand grip can be adjusted so that the overall length of the pistol is between 25.30-inches and 27.90-inches.

Ruger's Ar 556 Pistol Is Everything You Love In An Ar 15 (in Handgun Form)

This pistol comes with a 30-round standard AR magazine. They chose the Magpul PMag as one of my favorite AR magazines. (Unless you live where you don't have a mag that holds that many rounds - then Ruger will stock it with a 10-round magazine.) I should point out that the bolt is machined from 9310 alloy steel and the bullet is removed and stressed. Proof to ensure strength and durability. This pistol will truly last. The gun is chambered in 5.56mm - but it will also fire safely. 223 rim ammunition - a difference. Some AR manufacturers are still chambering their guns in .223 rims, so make sure you check what chambering it is. If you chamber a 5.56mm round in a gun

, then it can fly - as simple as that. We also have M4 feed ramps – many lesser ARs do not have this feature, and it makes for more reliable feeding if your AR has M4 feed ramps. Check out Ruger's website for more details on this handgun.

The AR-556 pistol does not come with any sights. This is a cost-saving drawback. I really like Ruger's AR Metal back-up sights, they are the best around. However, you can buy them at www.shopruger.com if you want. Or check around the 'net and you can find many places that sell backup sights for ARs - some better than others.

My sample AR-556 had a terrible trigger pull, right out of the box… most milli-spec trigger pulls are between 5-7 pounds… my sample came in at a few ounces under 9 pounds. Yes, you read that right - it was about 9-lbs and very hard, very hard, for some reason. And it appears that Ruger soaked this gun completely in oil before shipping it. He gave me two full cans of brake cleaner to get most of the oil out of the gun - and it's still leaking in several places. I lubed the trigger group before taking this gun to the range. The trigger pull improved slightly - but it was still very heavy. I fired over 600-rds though during my testing with this gun, and at the end of my shoot, the trigger pull felt quite light and smooth. The trigger pull was a little over 7 pounds. If you end up with a very heavy trigger pull, send it back to Ruger - they'll fix it. I'd like to think, since this was the first sample that was sent out, it passed the final inspection when it came to the trigger pull.

Things You Need To Know Before Buying An Ar Pistol

All the experiments were done by me - this time it did not help for any reason. So, I had a long shooting session - more than 600 rounds were fired. Most of this ammo was fired very quickly, for the first six magazines - I wanted the gun to be nice and hot..no mess. But it was smoking hot, to say the least. From Black Hills ammo, I had their 55-gr FMJ reamed ammo, and their 60-gr Soft Point reamed ammo. From their new line, I have their 50-gr Hornady V-MAX, 52-gr Match Hollow Point, 55-gr FMJ, 55-gr Barnes TSX, 60-gr Soft Point, 68-gr Heavy Match Hollow Point, and Their 75-gr heavy match hole points. An unmatched range of ammo to test, and the AR-556 never stopped

I put a SIG-Sauer Romeo 5 red dot on the upper receiver - this little red dot is the best on the market in my humble opinion, and it's tiny. It is very quick to pick up in bright sunlight or after dark. And, best of all, it will run 40,000-hours on a single CR2032 button battery. Also, it is motion activated - when the gun/sight is not moved for two minutes or more, it turns off automatically. When the gun is moved, the red dot springs to life immediately. Now, stop and think, if the red dot lasts forever, 40,000-hours equals 4.5-years - reason!

One thing I noticed is that if you want to attach a single point sling it has to be done on the arm cuff - you need a quick detach sling swivel that presses into a large hole and then you can attach a single point. You can attach the sling. I would prefer a position closer to the center point of the gun for better balance. Still it works as it is. But you may want to attach a rotating plate to either the receiver's back plate or the rear-most M-LOK slot to suit your personal preference.
