This is Frank Dorn's first pictorial map after returning from the Philippines. It was prepared during his years as an instructor at the Fort Sill Field Artillery School (1930-33), before moving to China, where he went on to produce several other pictorial maps, including the iconic pictorial map of Beijing.
Fort Sill Ok Map
The map provides a vivid picture of the area around Fort Sill, including a wealth of recreational activities and historical vignettes. On the left is the history of the region, from the native Indians and the arrival of Coronado in 1542 to the Louisiana Purchase. In the upper right corner is a more modern local history, from the days of Indian control of the region to the "Great Rush", the state of Oklahoma and the actual local history around Fort Sill.

Dorn was a friend and admirer of the map illustrator Jo Mora (1876-1947) and was clearly influenced by Mora's style of combining precise pictorial details, bright colors and a touch of whimsy, together with vignettes that provide an illustrated history of the place.
Frank Dorn was an artist, writer and military officer. Growing up in San Francisco, he attended the San Francisco Art Institute and became an accomplished cartoonist. After graduating from West Point, he got a job in the Philippines, and as a side project he wrote a book about a clan of tribesmen he met there. An acquaintance of Californian artist Jo Mora, Dorn began making his own maps; an early depicted Camp Stotsenburg in the Philippines.
While living in China, Dorn created his popular "Peiping" pictorial map. He later served in the field as an adviser to the Chinese military. Dorn's main military role was fluency in Chinese, in the China-Burma-India theater during World War II. He served there with US Army Vice Chief of Staff General "Uncle Joe" Stilwell during the Burma Campaign of 1942-1944, and served as commander in 1944-45. A 1942 Life Magazine article about the Burma mission stated that "Dorn, the artist, drew the maps of Stilwell's campaign."
Dorn eventually rose to the rank of brigadier general and retired in 1953. He settled in Carmel, California, living as his friend John Thompson, who describes Dorn as living a "semi-bohemian life, writing and painting. In 1960 In the 1990s he created some amazing psychedelic paintings, asked if he was the incarnation of a Buddhist painter and had progressive civil rights and anti-war views.” In the 1970s, Dorn authored two highly regarded scholarly books on the China and Burma theaters during the Second World War.

Lithographic map in colour, originally laid on a thin cardboard base. Narrow margins as issued, especially top and bottom, where they are cut very close to the outer printed edge. A few minor edges and scratches to edge mapping and empty margins. Two or three small areas of surface loss affecting the printed edge along the edge of the sheet and the edge of the upper right and lower left corners, now expertise. Bright and attractive printed colors. All in all a beautifully preserved specimen.
This amusing and attractive pictorial map of the important headquarters of the US Army Field Artillery School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, was designed and published in March 1931 by American officer, artist and cartographer Frank "Pinky" Dorn (1901-1981).
A native of San Francisco, Frank was the only son of Walter E. and Ellen (O'Reilly) Dorn. Discovering his artistic inclinations at an early age, he began junior high school and later attended night school at the San Francisco Art Institute between 1915 and 1918. In June 1919 he entered West Point Academy as a military cadet, graduating in March 1923. and was later commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 15th Field Artillery at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
In April 1926, he was assigned to the 24th Field Artillery at Camp Stotsenburg (now Clark Air Force Base) in the Philippines. Between June and September 1927, he was assigned to Fort William McKinley (now Fort Bonifacio) as an instructor at the Philippine Division's School of Communications. He was promoted to first lieutenant in the field artillery in May 1928. He returned to the United States in June 1929 and was assigned to battery officer training at Fort Sill between September 1929 and June 1930. He later became a field artillery instructor at Fort Sill with the secondary role of planning and training officer for 2nd Battalion, 1st Artillery. In September 1934 he joined the Office of the US Military Attaché in Peiping as language officer and assistant attaché. He was promoted to captain in September 1935. During these many early deployments, Dorn honed his talent as a pictorial cartographer by designing and privately publishing three entertaining and rarely seen pictorial maps, including the one of Fort Sill described here.
A Map And History Of The Military Reservation Of Fort Sill Oklahoma 1931

Dorn's magnificent pictorial map of Peiping, first published in 1936, is probably his best-known and most famous work, and published primarily as a tourist production, it is also the most common of his four pictorial maps. The other three, including Fort Sill, are much scarcer and rarely seen on the market, probably because they were printed and distributed in much smaller numbers and to a predominantly military clientele.

Like the Peiping map, Dorn's Fort Sill is a skillful and entertaining synthesis of local history and pictorial cartography. The two decorative friezes at lower left and upper right offer a series of pictorial vignettes outlining the regional history of Oklahoma and the more local history of the town of Lawton and Fort Sill from pre-colonial and early American times until 1931. the lower left frieze focuses on the pre-colonial period through the arrival of the Spanish and Coronado [1542] to the period of French control and the Louisiana Purchase [1803].
